Does Attic Insulation Help with Cooling?
The Value of Insulation
If you are like most people, the prospect of investing a little money to reap greater savings seems like a great idea. One of the largest and most constant expenditures is the cost of providing heating and cooling. The percentage of your monthly bill that dedicated to temperature control will vary according to your individual usage and your location, but most of the cost is due to air conditioning. If your house is over 10 years old, adding insulation could greatly benefit you in terms of comfort and savings in heating and cooling costs.
Do It Yourself or Hire It Out?
There are numerous types of insulating materials and methods for applying them. Some of these are do-it-yourself projects, but the prospect of crawling through a hot, dirty attic and the relatively low cost associated with most applications makes professional help desirable.
Foam Insulation Application
If you are looking for the ultimate product, then you might want to consider a foam material. Products such as Icynene provide dual benefits. In addition to insulating, foams also form a tight seal, isolating the interior of the home from outside. This type of material is sprayed against the underside of the roofing where it adheres to the decking and hardens as it dries. This essentially converts the entire structure into a conditioned space, providing insulating benefits and increasing overall efficiency by putting the ductwork inside a controlled environment. One major source of energy loss is caused by the infiltration of hot or cold air into the duct system. Sealing with foam virtually eliminates this problem. Foam is the most expensive type of insulating material and is a job best done by professionals.
Blown Insulation Insulation
A less costly and easier method of insulating is by the application of blown-in fiberglass. A product such as Insulsafe is blown in directly over the ceiling, providing an insulating layer separating the attic and living space. If you decide to do this yourself, you should check for the recommended R-factor, or amount of insulating material that is suggested for your geographical region.
Batt Material Insulation
You have probably seen the rolls of insulating batts in your local home improvement stores. The material is usually either cotton or fiberglass, and the batts are simply rolled between the ceiling joists in the attic or attached to studs for wall application. Batt insulating material will provide the benefit of increasing increased R-factor, but it does have the drawback of not providing the complete coverage offered by foam or blown-in methods.
